New patient Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a distinct approach to healthcare based on the original discoveries and experiences of its American founder Dr Andrew Taylor Still (1828 – 1917). Dr Taylor Still was the first physician to recognise fully the relationship between the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the body and how this interdependence was vital for physical and mental well-being. Dr Taylor Still was the first physician to recognise fully the relationship between the structure (anatomy) and function (physiology) of the body and how this interdependence was vital for physical and mental well-being.
Osteopathy is a patient-centred approach to health; an individualised management plan may include hands-on treatment, exercise, diet and lifestyle advice and, if appropriate, onward referral. Osteopathy also includes patient self-help and education.
Osteopaths assess their patients as unique individuals, reviewing all aspects of their symptoms. A detailed case history is taken during the first consultation, followed by a thorough physical and clinical examination to identify the patient’s problems, including any diseases that might be responsible for their symptoms. The osteopath will explore factors such as the patient’s mobility, posture and general state of well-being and may also consider lifestyle factors, levels of activity, dietary preferences and levels of stress
Working with their hands, osteopaths apply a range of techniques to help reduce pain, increase mobility, relieve muscle and deep tissues tension and enhance circulation. This potentially helps the patient’s own healing mechanism to work more efficiently and promotes recovery. Osteopaths help provide relief from structural, mechanical and functional problems in people of all ages and achieve this by restoring the body’s equilibrium and balance. This may be achieved through the use of osteopathic treatment or through exercise and lifestyle recommendations.

Pilates is a total body exercise, developed almost one hundred years ago by Joseph Pilates, to rehabilitate injured WW1 soldiers and later, for strength and conditioning of dancers. It became a favourite exercise option of the elite in New York in the 1960s, but has now become more widely available, with a huge range of styles, from classic to contemporary and a number of hybrid classes, combining Pilates with everything from yoga to boxing. The traditional method is low-impact, focusing on flexibility, muscular strength and endurance. The exercises are performed with an emphasis on precision technique; balanced postural alignment; core strength; controlled, flowing movements; and using breath to center the mind.

The two basic forms of Pilates are:
-Mat-based Pilates – this is a series of exercises performed on the floor using gravity and your own body weight to provide resistance. The main aim is to condition the deeper, supporting muscles of your body to improve posture, balance and coordination
-Equipment-based Pilates – this includes specific equipment that works against spring-loaded resistance, including the ‘reformer’, which is a moveable carriage that you push and pull along its tracks.

Some forms of Pilates include weights (such as dumbbells) and other types of small equipment that offer resistance to the muscles.

Health benefits of Pilates:

The health benefits of Pilates include:
-improved flexibility
-increased muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks (the ‘core muscles’ of your body)
-balanced muscular strength on both sides of your body
-enhanced muscular control of your back and limbs
-improved stabilisation of your spine
-improved posture
-rehabilitation or prevention of injuries related to muscle imbalances
-improved physical coordination and balance
-relaxation of your shoulders, neck and upper back
-safe rehabilitation of joint and spinal injuries
-prevention of musculoskeletal injuries
-increased lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing
-improved concentration
-increased body awareness
-stress management and relaxation.
